Challenges

The crane lift was within the ground of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital which has a high volume of emergency, patient, visitor and staff traffic. There are numerous construction schemes operating within the grounds which also have TTM which we had to be factored in to allow efficient traffic movements around our works. The client also required a sterile zone around there works meaning neither pedestrian nor vehicles could pass.

How we Overcame the Challenges

DTM’s management and design team reviewed the information provided. Through risk assessed design, DTM drafted detailed CAD plans which included many bespoke signs ensuring clear signing of diversion routes. The diversion route was set-up using an existing set of four-way temporary traffic lights. DTM liaised with stakeholders and agreed to manually operate these TTL for the duration of the works ensuring minimum impact to hospital traffic. DTM deployed marshals to aid pedestrian traffic and courteously advise them of the appropriate route to be taken so as to avoid the exclusion zone.

The crane lift went ahead safely with minimal impact to hospital traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular.
